Over a hundred years later, this single documentary for BBC Two uses the first hand testimony of the people involved at the time to explore this unique event and how it provoked a hug...。鎌倉時代、1200年代初め。貧しい農家に生まれながらも賢く利発な平次郎は、ある日、親鸞聖人と出会い、多くを学び成長していく。やがて京に戻った親鸞聖人を追って故郷を離れた平次郎は、「唯円」という名を授かり、仲間たちとともに親鸞聖人のもとで仏教を学ぶ。そんな中、かつての友人が苦境に立たされていると知った唯円は、なにも出来ない自分への無力感にとらわれ苦悩する。なぜ、善人よりも悪人が救われるのか？ 人は、なぜ生きるのか？ 「すべての人間が悪人であり、救われるために条件はない」という親鸞聖人の言葉の真意が、解き明かされていく――。。
