影片以汪星人的视角展现狗狗和人类的微妙情感，一只狗狗陪伴小主人长大成人，甚至为他追到了女朋友，后来它年迈死去又转世投胎变成其他性别和类型的狗狗，第二次轮回狗狗变成了警犬威风凛凛，再次轮回，又成了陪伴在一位单身女青年身边的小柯基犬。在经历了多次轮回之后，最终回到最初的主人身边。。故事围绕秦腔剧团的一对离婚夫妻展开，热爱秦腔的导演李想，因为前妻的突然出现，和未婚妻彩梦的关系弄得一团糟。然而李想想方设法凑足钱想买回另一半房子的产权，前妻却不要。她拿出一份协议，让李想做孩子三个月的临时父亲。协议期满，前妻将放弃房子的产权，远走高飞。。Each year, a father films his daughter on her birthday, asking her the same questions.
