现年65岁的如月澄（松坂庆子 饰）是一家花店的老板，作为父母的独生女，她自小并未获得更多的空间和关爱。还从很小的时候她就帮助家里打理花店，照顾老人。好不容易考上心仪的大学更被父亲逼迫退学回家照顾生意。而今她终于送走了母亲，回头看看发现自己没有爱情，没有事业，几十年来看用录像带录下来的电影是唯一爱好，不觉心生凄凉。偶然的机缘，她解开了家藏屏风上黑猫黎先生（及川光博 饰）的封印。为了彻底获得解脱，黎先生答应帮澄重新开始人生。奇妙的魔法，让澄一夜之间回到20岁的模样。她（桐谷美玲 饰）以如月堇这个名字走上了完全不一样的人生之路…… 本片根据高梨みつば的原作改编。。山田日後承認在開拍此片之前，已心諳渥美清的肺病步入末期，決定此章為最後一章，並安排由淺丘瑠璃子演的莉莉送寅次郎踏上人生的最後一程。分別15年後，兩人於如詩如畫的奄美大島重逢，感情依舊，鬥氣繼續，沒完沒了似的。正如山田所想，雖然系列必須完結，但始終不想為寅次郎的故事／人生劃上句號。結局如常開放，代表寅一直繼續他的旅程，日本人依然有夢。 公映後翌年，渥美清病逝，享年68歲，本片亦成為他的遺作。 Yamada knew before production began that Atsumi's health has deteriorated to such an extent that Tora-san to the Rescue would be the last film in the series.
