本片以祷者哈立德年轻时候的成长经历与听到杰克逊死讯之后的挣扎作为线索，以20多年前的埃及为舞台，通过伊斯兰教与西方文化在教育、生活、以及种种方面的冲突为背景。成功的描绘了一个不善言谈的小男孩如何成长为一个大男人的故事。。导演两年前用纪录片《再见，白楼》（《金边白楼的前世今生》）向自己的童年故居致敬。今次有贾樟柯的公司参与制作，他则以剧情片来细说这栋大楼的居民在逼迁前的故事。主角和两位好友每天都在白楼内练舞，希望终有一天可以上电视台参加比赛。眼见白楼面临清拆，他的父亲想尽办法组织居民，向政府争取更合理的赔偿方案。此时死党亦将离开柬埔寨，他发现从前安稳的家园未必能跟上时代的变化。。Plebs is described as "a thoroughly modern comedy in an ancient setting."
