It is based on the 1885 book The Gypsy Baron by Mór Jókai, about the romance between a poor Hungarian aristocrat and a mysterious Roma-looking Turkish girl in the 18th century. Music from Johann Strauss II's operetta The Gypsy Baron, based on the same novel, is used for the film's soundtrack.。「前章」が2005年12月17日から、「後章」が翌年の2006年12月15日から先行放送され、各章とも先行放映翌年からDVDが発売された。クライマックスの黄金聖闘士12人全員集結の場面では、アイオロス役の屋良有作が19年ぶりに『聖闘士星矢』への参加となった。
