Is there something sinister at work in the peaceful countryside?。在外流浪了几年的赵树理回到太行山区的老家尉迟村，一进家门就碰上媒婆土根嫂给妹妹小翠说媒，男方是48岁的二婚老男人老马。这时，小翠已跟村里的小伙子小庭自由恋爱了。村里各轮、狗剩等年轻人为参加镇上举办的八音会比赛热火朝天地练习。赵树理带领他们参加比赛大获成功。土根嫂拿着马先生的彩礼到赵家定亲，被小翠打了出来。面对农村这种婚姻状况，赵树理思考着下一步的路该如何走。赵树理读师范时一块参加学生运动的同学王申、史纪言、王中青、霍启高到了尉迟村赵家，与赵树理一起议论时局，寻求出路。。本片是对历史的一种假想，英德间发生了核大战，整个世界笼罩在核爆炸形成的红色烟雾中，到处是战争，到处是血腥的杀戮，人们开始迷失方向，陷入一片恐慌和无聊中……。
